The Liver Patients Support Group was founded some 16 years ago, and it was started by Jackie Shilton. Jackie held an informal meeting in her home for liver patients after being approached by members of the liver unit, Chaplain and Nursing Staff. As members grew, meetings were later held at the hospital itself to accomodate them all. Presently there are some 20+ members who are very dedicated to offer help and support for patients diagnosed with liver problems, both at the meetings and councelling sessions which we hold at the hospital. The majority of our members have either had transplants or have been carers for the transplanted patients, who have helped nurse them back to good health again, and with the backing and cooperation from the medical staff, we are able to offer our services to other liver patients by exchanging our knowledge, help and advice of what it was like to have gone through a transplant, and the remarkable life you are able to lead afterwards. We are not able to offer medical advice, we are just people that were fortunate enough to have received a liver transplant. But we must not forget the donors because if it were not for their kind and remarkable gift of an organ none of this would be possible. God bless all donors.
February 2007 saw the launch of our website, and we are now able to reach out to even more people keeping them up to date with the activities within the group.

Your liver is your life.
You only have one and though it is unique in its ability to regenerate, it can only survive limited damage - so it does need looking after.
The liver is the largest gland, and solid organ in the body, weighing some 1.8 kg in men and 1.3 kg in women. It holds approximately 13% (about one pint or 0.57 litres) of the total blood supply at any given moment, and it is estimated that it has over 500 functions.
